St. John September 2010 and Kaleidoscope Review

Post by needmesomesun »

St. John September 2010
best. trip. ever.

This was our longest stay to date (two weeks) and we had decided to travel fairly last minute. We usually find some time in May, but work was a zoo and by the time we actually had time, it was hurricane season. So, we bought ourselves some good trip insurance and held our breath. A few weeks before we left Earl had blown through and we watched swirl after swirl cross the Atlantic in the days that followed. As luck would have it, we remained hurricane free the whole trip. There were some choppy waters and some winds blew, which we had not expected for September, but it certainly cooled things off for us, and kept everything refreshing.

We found the villa we stayed at on VRBO. Years ago, on our first trip to St. John we stayed in a villa at Klein Bay and had admired Ditleff from afar. A few times we hiked the ragged trail out to Ditleff beach. My husband saw his first ever St. John turtle there, and I had a panic attack and missed it. Eventually, over the years, I calmed down and learned to enjoy the grass bottomed bay.

We arrived without a hitch. Breezed across St. Thomas to Red Hook. Brian, the host for Kaleidoscope met us at the dock and helped us with our bags. We were in and out of Cool Breeze quickly. We love those guys! So laid back, I can tell they snicker inside at my Massachusettsness. Then off to the Villa.

I had never in my life seen anything quite like it. The photos online really didn't do it justice (so I wound up taking quite few of my own to try and entice our family to return with us!).

The landscaping was gorgeous and lush.

Brian was talking about this and that and I was glazed over looking through him to the view outside.

Thank God for my husband, if it wasn't for him paying attention, I never would have been able to turn the tv on or dock the ipod to listen to it outside.

We wandered around with gaping mouths and then got ready to head back to town for dinner at La Plancha and stock up on some groceries and water.
After 12 hours of travel, we slept quite well.

Our first order of business: Farmers Tan.

Since some people don't wear their sunblock regularly, they have jarringly uneven skin tone in bizarre places. Like above the ankles. St. John helps with this.

We didn't really keep any kind of journal on our trip. We just wanted to enjoy ourselves as best we could. We did want to review the villa, as it is new, and there wasn't a ton of info out there, for us, when we were looking.

It is difficult to not enjoy having an infinity pool. This was our first experience with one and it was very nice.

Normally we don't spend a ton of time at the rental we choose, but this trip was very different. It was several days before we could peel ourselves away from Ditleff Point. We toured the North Shore road and stopped at all the overlooks.

There was really no reason to leave. The pool was amazing. It was heated and "psychedelic" (at night you could turn on an underwater light that changed the water different colors as well as the waterfall). It also had some kind of system that didn't require chlorine, which was a bonus.

I did get an in villa massage while we were there. I won't mention who the service was from as I really didn't enjoy it. I was looking to be massaged into buttery sweet oblivion while listening to the waves crash below, but instead I was poked and prodded (instead of rubbed) and told my energy was stuck and that I needed to exercise more. Usually this is something the recipient of the comment is well aware of, so it didn't' sit well with me. Unfortunately the weeks (if not months) leading up to the vacation involved plenty of 17 hour days/ 7 days a week, leaving no "me" time, so this comment flat out irritated me. I wasn't looking to be "healed," I just wanted to relax. My gasps of pain didn't seem to deter her from jamming her bony little fingers into my tender body and pressing even harder when I would flinch.

We planned on giving someone else a try, but never got around to it. I couldn't find any great reviews for massage therapists and I wasn't up for a sequel. If you know of a great massage therapist on island, please send me a PM, or post below, for our next stay. Someone gentle!

Ditleff was a great place to walk and explore. It is really beautifully planned and landscaped. The beach was pretty calm for the whole trip. I can assure all of you that nature is alive and well there. We caught a lobster in the bay below the house:

But he was just a little guy, so we threw him back to grow up some.

The bird watching from the tower was awesome. If they weren't whizzing by 5 feet from your head, they were perched on top.

We went and had coffee there almost every morning for sunrise.

Image

We were able to see this deer swim clear across Fish Bay.

Image

Sunsets weren't bad either.

You could see turtles surfacing in both bays all day long from both the pool and the tower. It was my favorite place at the villa.

If it was screened in I would have slept there :)

It was a great spot for catching a fair share of rainbows.

I think one of my husbands favorite villa features was the circular driveway. It probably seems like an odd favorite, but after a bad driveway experience you become overly grateful for a good one. You know how some rentals are just a complete chore to get in and out of? Well, not so much the case at this house. It was ridiculously easy, and since he does all the driving, he was more than appreciative that he didn't have a 95 point turn in order to leave or come home from a long day at the beach.

Image

I wound up sick about halfway through our trip and after three days I decided to go to Myrah Keating. They were very nice and saw me quickly, but I did wind up with the wrong antibiotic and after 4 days they got my test results back which confirmed this. I believe this was the reason my cold lingered for so long, even after our trip. FYI- Chelsea Drugstore has a plethora of over the counter remedies and the pharmacists were complete dolls.

That being said there aren't many underwater photos from most of our trip. We did a lot of resting and the villa was the perfect place for this.

Even the few days I spent in bed were really not that painful with the view I had while laying there.

Image
IMG_4253 by locococonuts, on Flickr

The master bath was a dream

Image
IMG_3973 by locococonuts, on Flickr

Image
IMG_3970 by locococonuts, on Flickr

and there was an indoor shower in another bedroom in case you are not into outdoor showers.

Image
IMG_4000 by locococonuts, on Flickr

If there was ever a place to get nursed back to health, this was it.

I don't have many photos of the bedrooms, but they were all equally beautiful and each had a king bed, bath, and private verandah. I'd say it would be ideal for group travel.

One of the guest beds:

The kitchen at the villa was amazing and we utilized this so often, both due to me being sick (I actually had to leave a restaurant mid-meal because I just couldn't stop coughing), and the restaurant closures.

This kitchen was the most well equipped of any villa we have ever stayed at. They had a coffee grinder and a salad spinner. Two items we are not used to finding. There really wasn't an item we looked for and didn't find. All of it was great quality cookware.

We made lots of use of our St. John Spice Packs (Thanks Ruth!):

Grill Rub Encrusted Chicken:

Image
IMG_0197 by locococonuts, on Flickr

Jerk and Voodoo Salmon for breakfast with eggs.

Image
IMG_0448 by locococonuts, on Flickr

We enjoyed a ton of Josephine's greens (as you can tell from our food pics) which we bought at her garden center. While I am on the salad topic I wanted to mention a complete bargain to be had at Starfish Gourmet:

Image
IMG_0117 by locococonuts, on Flickr

See the bottles in the back? They are refillable with organic olive oil and balsamic vinegar (we left the bottles and unused portions behind, but I wish we left a note with them). It was actually less expensive to refill them than to buy balsamic and oil back home! I think they were both well under $10.

They also have decent freshly sliced prosciutto and mozzarella.

Image
IMG_0094 by locococonuts, on Flickr

After a week and a half of searching, and circling, we found an open parking space in town! Wooooo! We marked the momentous occasion with a high five, squeals of delight from me, and a photograph.

Image
IMG_0321 by locococonuts, on Flickr

A parking solution really does need to happen.

The water turned to glass and the last three days we spent floating at Francis

And Maho

(well mostly Francis)

Image
IMG_0328 by locococonuts, on Flickr

I have video, but can't figure out how to embed it from my flickr page... If anyone knows how to do this, please feel free to let me know!

We brought food and drinks to the beach, each day, with us and ate right in the water while floating:

There were barely any people on the beach (well Maho was a little crowded on Sunday) but the few who were there were so nice and great conversations were struck up. We met some people who lived on island but were from a town close to where we are from. It's always interesting to learn what brings people to live on St. John.

Before I forget, I'd like to take a brief moment and profess our undying love for Deli Grotto.

Image

Early on we did get to meet 1hornbfish and tightleftwideright. We went on an expedition to Lamesure with them. I say expedition because the road was absolutely pitted from Earl (I guess). 1horn saw her first shark and we were glad to be a part of it. Tightleft made us some scrumptious rum punches and he should definitely share that recipe with the forum. Yum! They are very fun, kind, generous, and left us with lots of goodies on their last day!

There was a spa at the villa, and while we usually aren't into them, we did give it a try.

Image
IMG_3950 by locococonuts, on Flickr

There is a tunnel below the tower

Image
IMG_3959 by locococonuts, on Flickr

That leads out to quite a nice view

Image
IMG_3943 by locococonuts, on Flickr

The final days seemed to fly by at record speed and before we knew it our stay came to an end.

Image
IMG_0368 by locococonuts, on Flickr

We woke up extra early on our last day to catch the sunrise from the tower.

As you mentioned you used to hike the 'ragged trail' out to a pristine Ditleff Point and now you can say you stayed behind those vile gates before the entire Point was all covered in unlived in, needless rental villas. These are the good old days. www.ditleffpoint.com

How pleasant.

What I witnessed was a well thought out, beautiful, planned development with a paved road all the way to the end, unlike a huge percentage of the unpaved roads on island which dump silt into the bays repeatedly, over and over again, year round. Every. Time. It. Rains.

I've been visiting for many, many years, and I have seen some eyesores, and this development is not one of them. The rental was useful to me.

I spoke directly with the owners, on occasion, and they were very nice people.

Some work really hard and deserve to spend their money the way they like.

Hopefully this post isn't going to turn into a political tirade, as most people on this forum rent a villa. They were all on undeveloped land at one point, and I have yet to see a post like this on a travel report.

Thanks for setting such a nice tone for my post.

Thanks for sharing. Wonderful pictures and the villa looks great. It was just what I needed a morning like this with minus degrees (Celcius).

WOW...talk about relaxing in the lap of luxury, looks like you picked out a REAL nice lap! Beautiful villa. Thanks for taking the time for a trip report and review of it. One thing....did it make re-entry more or less painful

Sorry to hear about your, uh, uncomfortable massage experience. I have had a couple of those myself. And I did question the message therapists credentials.....of which their were none, just a couple of classes and a desire to rub people the wrong way. Hope you can find a more "sensitive" message therapist on your next trip.

The villa looks great, and your pictures are really nice of it. Thanks again for taking the time to post your report!

Needmesomesun, what a fabulous trip report. Thank you for taking the time to share with us, your wonderful trip.

The villa looks stunning. The first year we went to STJ (11 years ago), we too, hiked out to the end of Ditleff and I had a panic attack! I just couldn't snorkel there, we had to turn around and get me back to civilization. The developers have done a great job of integrating the native plants with the lovely stonework throughout. The path leading down to the once "scary" beach is amazing.

As for the massage, I'm so sorry you had a bad masseuse (although it makes for a great story). I've had two on island and they were both wonderful. I'll have to check with Pete as to who they were...he made those arrangements. In both cases, the experience was just what you were looking for. I felt like melted butter afterward.

Thank you, again, for the detailed and photo rich trip report.

Missing St. John. As always.

Lucky you!! That is the one and only villa on the south shore that I would really love to stay in. Thanks for sharing and I'm so sorry that you were sick while you were there but sounds like you had a nice time inspite of it.

Oh My! What a stunning place to stay - I can imagine that two weeks would be needed to find your way around! Thank you so much for the beautiful pictures - besides the villa, I especially liked the pictures of Ditleff to the end and Francis on such a clam day.

Wonderful.

Great report and pictures. I have been "watching" that villa for a while and it is definately on the list for the next group trip.

How was the walk down to the beach? What is the beach like?

I have a question about the bedrooms. It appears on the floorplan that you can access the bedrooms next to each other can be accessed without going outside. In otherwords if a parent and children were staying in bedrooms next to each other you wouldn't have to go outside. Is that correct?

It appears as though the villa is on a cliff above the water. Can you get down to the water from the villa? Did you snorkle right there by the villa?
