trip report Mar. 28 - Apr. 3, part 3!

Post by paulandtracie »

Hit Deli Grotto first thing Wed. morning for sandwiches, packed up and headed to Honeymoon via Caneel Bay. Got our blue ticket and hit the beach...fantastic!

Quiet day on Honeymoon, with only two big party boats. It's wierd watching them pull up, then seeing a steady stream of bobbing heads and snorkels like a chain of ants. Pretty funny! It's my favorite picnic beach and did not disappoint. Snorkeling near the rocks to the left was not great, I wonder if the abundant number of daily snorkelers affects the fish/coral. I did happen to see two rather large, unusual spike-finned fish cruising by...

Had the obligatory $10 bushwacker at Caneel on the way out and waited out a short rainshower. I appreciate the beauty of this resort and the laid back atmosphere but still am surprised when I see so many people in collared shirts, dressy dresses, spike heels, jewelry, penny loafers during the day...just not my vacation style. We thought maybe there was a wedding but turns out a lot of people dress up for lunch (?) :) I for one am WAY too lazy to contemplate such a thing but hey, to each his own! They sure looked better than us, we were all covered with sand and had hair like wet dogs!

Off to Coral Bay with Innervisions in the CD player, windows open and smiling faces waving down the road!! Stopped in at the Tourist Trap to say hi to Larry and Mary (aka greatest food/drink salesperson on earth) was waiting tables.

Lucky Ted enjoyed his first 'Drive Left, Drink Right' and let me tell you, that was one tipsy snowman!! We hadn't intended to eat again but Mary was too persuasive and we split awesome tuna bites and grouper sandwich.

We enjoyed watching a shower roll in over Coral Bay (the locals were ecstatic as rain was so badly needed), and although it rained on and off that evening, it turned out to be the only rain of the week. Nice for us but not so much for the island. It's really incredible to watch the transformation from brown to green as the leaves soak up the water!

Finally it was time to meet our friends 'Bigcheeze' and family, who were arriving from Michigan. For those who don't know, we had 'met' last year on the forum, and sure enough, offered to meet up on island--but you know how that goes! Best of intentions and all, those plans usually fall through. At any rate, last year, first day, by sheer coincidence, we ended up sitting on the next barstool to them at the Beach Bar, figured out who we all were, found out we lived ten miles from each other and have become fast friends!! But...I digress.

Met the extended BigCheeze family at the ferry dock, spent some time helping them get settled (aka drinking at their fantastic bar next to the the pool!), then it was off to the Beach Bar. Had a great time hanging out with Boo, who was off duty, and of course Ted got 'lit'! We initiated the evening tradition of ending the night at the BigCheeze tiki bar , with 'Joe', aka Paul, as bartender...great times with much music and laughter!

Another spectacular day on St. John!! :D

Yes, the only rain all week and it happened to be our boat day with Capt John!!! Although the island needed it, we could've gone with out it. Love Ted...I think he has been drinking a little too much...his face is all red when he gets "lit"
