Gas prices
I keep watching the gas prices and every week I say to myself, " they can't go any lower." But each week they are are dropping, the lowest this week at $2.05. I know in the southern states it is as low as $1.88. This lead me to wonder..... How much is gas on St John right now??
Re: Gas prices
Pam: Gasoline is still in the low $4 per gallon range, alas, and with all the turmoil at what was the Hovensa facility in St. Croix, I wouldn't expect STJ gas prices to move much lower anytime soon; they might even trend upwards. For folks who haven't been tuning in to this, there had been a refiner in St. Croix for many years (Hovensa), but they announced last year that they will be shutting down their operations on March 1st of 2015, and it is not at all clear if an undercapitalized offer to acquire their refinery will succeed. The current rack rates for fuel trucks have been frozen, but pretty soon, with no new refining, the tanks in STX will go empty. At that point, all VI gasoline will have to be shipped in from Puerto Rico or beyond, and it is too early to tell how that might affect prices at the pump. The importation of refined petroleum products, including gasoline, from Puerto Rico has been ramping up prior to the closure of the Hovensa plant, so by the time the tanks run out there, we may already have fully transitioned to PR gasoline, but the impact on local pricing at the pump remains unclear. Price reductions that even remotely tracked the recent trends in mainland gas pricing seem unlikely.
But hey, St. John is pretty small, so how much gasoline can you actually use? St. Thomas has a few gas stations with really great prices, but they never seem to be open...
Now on the mainland, it's a very different matter. I had to drive from New Hampshire to New Jersey for a funeral in the family last week, and was astounded to see gas prices under $2.00. Thank goodness we elected this guy!
Oh, wait, maybe that didn't actually happen...
All the best,
Kevin

Re: Gas prices
Thanks for the pricing. Kevin, I did not know about any of the St. Croix issues. Thank you for the information.
I figured the prices wouldn't apply to St John. Heck , a tank of gas is a drop in the bucket compared to the rest of the costs factored into the trip. I would pay $10/ gallon to be there!

Re: Gas prices
St John gas comes from St Thomas. When I lived there, 2010-2011, gas for these islands was actually barged from Puerto Rico. According to those, on St Croix, gas refined there was never for the islands. Doubt prices will go down at all.
Re: Gas prices
According to this article, Hovensa gas is being sold in the territory, although not for much longer:

I am skeptical about that $2.57 claim for STT, unless it was one of the gas stations mentioned in my post that have great prices, but only because they were shuttered years ago.
All the best,
Kevin
