I am trying to plan a trip to the BVI's and know for sure that we are going to The Baths but can't decide between The Indians or The Caves...any opinions??

We are probably going to book a private trip on "blast" through Cruz Bay Watersports, since there are 17 of us.

Thanks for any input.

I vote for the Indians. The Caves are nice too but the Indians are WAAAAAAY better.

Definitely the Indians. Saying that I think you could probably do both in one day. They are so close to each other, especially if you are on a power boat. We've done both by sail in one day.

This might be a stupid question but what is the Indians

"The Indians is called such since several large underwater mounts rise out of the water and resemble a feathered war chef bonnet. The reefs team with fish and colorful coral - the combination of snorkelers and divers is interesting divers look up at groups of snorkelers floating above; snorkelers look down at rising bubbles from "schools" of divers. The sea bed dramatically falls and rises all the way around the mounts, so Snorkelers will view coral reefs up close and in the distance too. It's one of the few places in the BVI where this occurs and is one of the reasons The Indians is so popular."

The Indians is a rock outcropping off of Norman Island that has fantastic snorkeling. Here is a picture of the Indians:


As another poster stated, the Indians and Caves are very close to each other so it would be quick (10 minutes) to get from one location to the other. If you have two hours or less in that area then we recommend spending your time at the Indians. We could easily spend the whole day snorkeling the Indians and be satisfied. Here is a link to a chart with the "tracks" from our GPS that shows the location of the Indians and the Caves on Norman.

I would vote for the Indians too - excellent snorkeling. Saw a real shark there once, small one that took off as soon as we noticed it. And swimming through the underwater cave is very cool.

Here is another photo from our trip there on White Wing 4/05.


Indians way better than Caves - pretty close to each other, but rather spend more time at Indians than pull off the mooring ball to scoot over to the Caves.
If you can, take your time looping then once, come back to boat, rest, and go back out to areas of highest interest.

From a distance, this gives you some perspective. The Indians are on the left, and you cant make them out, but the Caves at the base of the cliffs on the left of side of the island on the right (Norman Island?) Tortola in background. Wow - I just gave myself some DIF looking at this...

In the above pic, you are looking due north (basically). The large rock to the right of the Indians is Pelican Island (since that large island in the background is Tortola). The Caves in this photo are from where the photo was taken more or less, or behind the photographer, on Norman Island.
