One perfect day STT - What to do?

Post by wecruise »

We've been to STT twice before on cruise stops. Toured Charlotte Amalie, taxi ride in the hills above town, and Red Rock. Coki beach. OK, but not that great.

We have another one day stop(8AM-4PM) in November, and my goal is to find something better to do; preferably away from the tourist hoards. We like sightseeing, snorkeling, beach, hiking, adventure, gardens, and getting away from crowds. Are we too tight on time to ferry over to STJ and do anything neaningful...9AM Red Rock ferry over, 1PM ferry back?? What could we do to enjoy STT more than we have in the past? Is it worth it to rent a car and drive around more of STT? Any less tourist oriented beaches with good snorkeling? Any good organized tours? What else is there??

What to do for one stop

Well well well. Do I have the deal for you. We did this a few years ago. Planning is important. We reserved our vehicle in advance. Even arranged for beach chairs. We were off the boat as soon as they would let us and went to Red Hook. Took the ferry over and picked up our 4x4 and took the other folks with us on a short tour and ended up at Maho for a while. Left there and had lunch at Caneel. Pricey but goooood. The hot buffet is worth the $25.00. You can use the beach there as well. But not their lounges. Cruz Bay Water Sports has chairs to rent. We took the Charlotte ferry back and had plenty of time to spare. Take a taxi from the ferry dock. It doesn't look far but it is. By doing this you escape all the other boat folks for a little bit and get to see and stay at nice beaches on your own time frame....God bless...Bill

If you want to stay on STT, what about trying the beach at the Secret Harbour resort? We've stayed there twice and it has a very nice, not too crowded beach, with good snorkeling on the right side (as you are looking out towards the water). There is a dive shop where you can rent floaties and snorkel gear, and a very good casual restaurant, Blue Moon, on property, as well as a beach bar.

Cruise ship guests are very welcome at Secret Harbour from what I could see.

Another option if you want to stay on STT is to go to the beach where the old Renaissance Grand (closed now) use to be. Take the taxi as if you were going to Coki Beach, but half way down the road (after you turn off 38) to Coki, tell the taxi to let you off. The beach will be right there on the Water Bay side. You can walk to Coki (100 yards or so) from this beach. If you continue around the beach, you’ll come to a funky place called Fungi’s. It’s a great Caribbean place that is in the Point Pleasant Resort. Good food & drinks.

How about taking a taxi to Magen's Bay on STT and having lunch at Indigo?

Haven't done that route myself, but it comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by Bluwater on this forum

Have always wanted to do an eco tour of the mangroves: http://www.viecotours.com/ - there may be other sites as well.
