Relocation Questions

I am currently a Police Officer in Michigan (19 years) and have a year left before retirement. I was recently made aware of USVI P.D. and there efforts to recruit cnadidates from the mainland for employment with them. While I'm definately ready to retire from my current employer, I'm definately NOT ready to retire for good. My wife and I absolutely love the USVI, visit every year and had always planned to retire down there eventually..this would merely get us there sooner. My concern, is the school system..I still have high school age children and was wondering what choices I had with schools, Public, private, cost ect...? Any comments, suggestions would be great, whether it be knowledge of the P.D., schools ect...we are in the info gathering stage at this point and anything anyone has to offer would be great...Thanks

Hey Jethro! I'm not in a position to help answer your questions, but I can say that the VIPD could sure use someone like you!! I hope you get the information you are looking for here, this is a great forum for that!

Jah mon, check out the St. John School on Gifft Hill and the Antilles School on St. Thomas. My kids have been beggin', but we haven't given in yet. Livin' in da islands mon is hard work and low pay. It's a sacrifice, and you need to measure twice and cut once.

I would get in touch with the VIPD and get the honest scoop on the opportunities. Check out a blog for relocatees that have made it work for themselves so far at http://livedelifeusvi.blogspot.com/

Here's a post that challenges the fantasy of living in the islands - http://www.vimovingcenter.com/talk/read.php?4,91111 . I keep wanting to do this. But, being realistic, the two to three weeks I spend there a year are probably better than living there full time.

Good luck and god bless. I really think that the USVI is a vacation destination for most people.

Good luck bro.

Cheers, RickG

Welcome to the forum. We have some links and lots of phone numbers here:

If you find any busted links, let me know :)

We lived on St. Thomas for about 5 years with young children. Every place has it challenges - I would put education in the USVI on that list. There are a lot of options, but private schools can be quite expensive.
