Don't be fooled with Irene!
Just starting to blow here with Irene. We lost power once and it's really bad here now (near Philly)
Everybody up North, be prepared. I didn't think it would be this bad because it seemed like such a long time coming.
Good luck!

i was surprised things weren't worse--seems that the eye never really reorganized after north carolina.--good for us. we had some minor flooding on the sound (the park behind my house was a tidal lake) --the small boat house/sailing club on the sound where we keep our kayaks got really damaged with storm surge (lost a bunch of wharf stuff) several trees down, we lost cable internet and phone early this morning and only got the weather forecast thru a cell call from a friend in coral bay! ( irony at its best!) -- at 7 20 we are still getting pretty major gusts --but nothing really sustained. the eye apparently was just over the city this am,. had this come in as predicted, this could have been a catastrophic storm for NYC--I am thankful it wasn't so fierce.
< leaving on the 22nd of march...but too lame to figure out the ticker thing again!>
I’m glad to see that Irene wasn’t so bad as feared.
For me it seems as if USA has been hit by more natural disasters in the past few years than normal. But I'm not sure if I perhaps pay more attention to disasters in USA now, because I think about whether it can risk harming someone here I "know".
Are the number of disasters increased?

Exit, that's true. We got it worse here. We're about 100 miles away and it was pretty bad.Exit Zero wrote:I spoke with people in Cape May Point - NJ and they said things were fine with no serious damages wind or water.
We lost power for 13 hours, ended up with about 5 inches of water in the basement and a 100' oak tree fell about 50 feet from our house...now that was a sound I never heard before.
I was more worried about our shore house, but that ended up being fine.

Linne – it is a bad weather year in the USA compared to recent years

Exit - This storm was more about its duration than its intensity. Those rains fell and the winds howled for a LONG time, and when combined with the already saturated ground from the wet August we’ve had, that’s why the big issue is more about river flooding.
In fact, those outer rain bands that clobbered inland NJ and PA along the Delaware River (and later New England) pulled energy away from the center of the storm lessening its impact along the shore.
However, for some reason, our fav beach in Spring Lake NJ got particularly hammered destroying most of the non-commercial boardwalk there that we love to walk and run. I am hoping the concrete foundations that have a “WPA 1937” stamp on them are intact so they can just replace the walking surface. We were just there last Wednesday, so you can see “before and after”.

Glad to see everyone is doing okay in here. Was the boardwalk damage caused by the storm surge?
We lost power Sunday at 11 a.m. and just got it back this morning at 9. Hardest part was no running water but we managed. Fortunately we have a generator so we were able to keep fridges/freezers cold and figured out a way to get our well pump working yesterday to at least be able to wash some dishes.
Feel bad for those still out of power and isolated because of flooding. We saw a sprinkling of rain- our issues were all wind related.
