Heading to Hungary to meet relatives

Post by Anthony »

I don't know if I have shared any of this saga here before but maybe it is a story some of you will find interesting. Long story short: my dad is a refugee of the Hungarian revolution of 1956, and when he hurriedly left the country he left behind his brother, never to see him again. My dad had 3 sons, and his brother it turns out had 3 daughters. Through fits and starts and because I was posting stuff online looking for my unknown cousins 5 years ago, one of them eventually found me. And so later today we are leaving (my family and one of my brothers) for Hungary, and on Sunday we are driving out east to meet my cousin(s) for the first time. Then on Monday we are hoping to visit the town where my father was born, which is not actually in Ukraine.

So, I am hoping this is a good story with a happy and memorable meeting, and, I also want to let everyone know that I may be offline for a good stretch of time between now and Tuesday - so behave! :) (although it doesn't seem I have to say that much anymore).

Anyway - I will post some photos of this trip when I can.

My father's family was scattered in the wind because of WWII. He didn't make it back to his hometown (and childhood home) until he was in his late 60s. Relatives were still being "found" until recently.

I hope you have a wonderful gathering and tell us all about Hungary when you return.

I have not even really wrote up our trip at all or posted many photos. I hope to get to that this summer! Overall it was wonderful though. And Budapest as a destination is a great city I think.
