your most favorite moment on the rock...

Post by mahojim »

Ok,it's been asked before, but I thought I'd refresh the question~ What is your singular most favorite memory that you've ever had on STJ?
Everyone can say something like,"everything", or explain happenstances that put it all together, but what are your groovin' Love City lovers most favorite individual memories?
I'll start.
After a swim on Maho,my squeeze and I returned to the beach. she read her book while I napped on her lap and legs. I had to look up a few times when I woke up to make sure I wasn't dreaming, then fell back to sleep again, over and over. She scratched my head, and everything... That was my favorite moment; daydreaming in and out of sleep on Maho,...it was the best "live" dream that I've ever had. Loving both sides of consciousness in my favorite place with my best girl on that beautiful day. Maho is magic.
So what's yours?
Smiles-

Gosh, Jimmy, it's impossible to pick one. It's almost impossible to pick just 10 or 15! Two stand out for me, though.....
Both from our first trip:
We snorkeled from Salomon around to Honeymoon, and it was the first time I snorkeled in the rain. I thought "what is that sound???" Picked my head up, and it was POURING but the sun was shining so bright. Blaine and I shared a big hug and kiss and just marvelled. It was a perfect moment :)
I'd never snorkeled before St. John. About a week in, we went to Waterlemon, and when I first entered the water, I realized that I'd waited til my face was underwater to THEN take my deep breath. The exact opposite of how I'd breathed when entering water for the first nearly 50 years of my life. And it felt completely natural, and I loved it!
Thanks, that brought a smile to my face :)

There are many but got to go with the first trip. Girls were 5 and 9. The look of pure joy on their faces in the back of the jeep as we drove those crazy roads and when we stopped at a deserted beach, where they screamed for joy as the ran to the water.

Three things are standing out. First day of last trip at Maho, just taking it all in, so happy to be back. First time I ever snorkeled at Waterlemon and felt like I was on such a high from all the sealife. And, my favorite, I think from last month, the first night there after enjoying Maho, sitting on the porch with my honey, the breeze, the view, listening to some great music (doing a little porch dancing) and just feeling grateful - to be in such an awesome place with the man I love and knowing that he does that for me, because he is just not as smitten with SJ and snorkeling as I am. I felt like my heart would burst! 8)

Ditto, and knowing if I woke up there and wanted to go swim the turtles I would always find them

I have two for different phases of our lives.

#1 - 2nd trip. Riding the Caneel ferry and upon arrival, my husband telling the greeter "no thanks, we want to walk to our room." It was a very special feeling to return to place that held such wonderful memories. It was better the second time because we knew what to expect and how great it was going to be.

#2 - fast forward 10 years - taking our 4.5 month old son into the ocean for the very first time at Maho.

Meeting other forum members at the Beach Bar and then going out on Kekoa with them that week! Love the view of the rock from out on the boat.

Can't wait to get back, soon, baby soon!

I have 2 the first was after a bad round of chemo for my wife. We went down I had to push her through the air ports because she didn't have the strengh to to get from gate to gate but when the doors of the plane opened up she was like her old self for a week doing every thing she wanted to do. The other was 8 months later when her friends and I went down to spread her ashes at Hawksnest.

Many favorites, but this is the first that came to mind. We were snorkeling in Europa Bay. It was very much deeper than my personal comfort level, (probably 30 ft) but very still and clear so I was coping. When all of a sudden and octopus, then a pair of octopi appeared in front of me. They noticed me about the same time and began to circle my body, about 1 foot from me, I was then vertical in the water, . They went up and down, checking me out. They have a very soft, kind eye, much like a dog. When their curiosity was satisified, they swam away and attached themselves to the side of a rock. We watched them attach, and when they settled in they were totally invisible. Just as this was over, and we were beginning to settle ourselves, we looked up at a 6 ft barracuda. Wasn't too thrilled with the baracuda, but the octopi were totally awesome.

One of my favorites would be our family's first trip to the rock, we had a planned trip to Cancun that had been canceled and a timeshare we needed to use or lose - One of the best decisions we ever made! below is an excerpt of a post to my blog back then...

"Welcome to Love City"

Sorry, no long love affair here we were just bitten or “hooked” as they say.

It was July 2010, we were scheduled to go to Cancun (YES – Cancun) when we inadvertently wound up on this rock they call Love City. We, generally being more the “Glitzy” Las Vegas or Atlantis type of traveler didn’t really know what to expect when arriving on St John for the first time. We had heard it was quiet, not really a lot to do… could we endure an entire week with NO casino? NO wave-runner rental? NO Crowds? Turns out – we most definitely could!

The Island, the people and OOOH… let’s not forget the RUM! (I LOVE ME SOME CRUZAN RUM) It was all amazing, what an awesome “vibe”, we “Got it” - even my kids being 4 and 10 at the time “Got it”, they got that week what took me 42 years too find.

I Recall on our first ferry ride over from St Thomas, watching the bustling island of St Thomas fade from view as this “Jurassic Park” – Love City grew larger and larger as we neared. We had splurged a little this trip taking the Westin private ferry, you arrive directly at their private dock greeted by a smiling host and a complimentary Rum Punch AND you are already “checked in”, they hand you your keys, grab your luggage and whisk you away to your own private villa in a golf cart! How cool is that? – that’s like Fantasy Island Cool! I knew right away this place was going to be something special – it may have been the all the rum punch kicking in!

Anyway, my love affair of St John now borderlines on obsession, a sickness of sort!
